Brad Hazel Background, Experience and Career

My personal and professional background reflects a steady progression through life that emphasize responsibility, adaptability, and hands-on problem solving. While the environments and specific situations have varied, my underlying principles of learning through experience and operating effectively under real-world conditions have remained consistent throughout my life.

Brad's Early Influences

Early life experiences always play a significant role in shaping our mindset and the skills that carry us forward into our later years. Growing up in a rural environment encouraged my independence, creativity, and a hands-on approach to problem solving from an early age. With fewer structured activities and limited access to nearby peers, much of my time was spent learning through exploration, trial and error, and figuring things out firsthand.

At home, my mother the artist and my father the electronics expert helped foster my interest in creativity, practical skills, mechanical systems, and self-reliance. Whether observing, assisting, or simply being exposed to how things were conceptualized, built, fixed, and maintained, these early experiences created a foundation rooted in understanding of how things work and how to improve them.

Like many formative periods, there were challenges along the way that helped build my resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. While those experiences are not the focus, they contributed to a long-term perspective centered on working through problems, staying resourceful, and continuing to move forward.

These early influences established a pattern that continues today, learning by doing, approaching challenges with a practical mindset, and steadily building skills over time through real-world experience.

Mid-1980's

I began an early involvement in public service beginning with a youth fire service program. This experience introduced me to the fundamentals of emergency preparedness and response, teamwork, and structured training programs. It also provided an early understanding of personal responsibility and the importance of safety and awareness when working in high-risk environments.

Late 1980's

Continuing my involvement in volunteer fire service and the introduction into search and rescue, helped me build foundational skills in situational awareness, communication, and coordinated response, while reinforcing the value of working within a team under demanding conditions.

1990's – 2000's

As I developed my long-term career in emergency medical services and firefighting roles. Over this period, I gained extensive experience providing emergency pre-hospitle care, responding to a wide range of situations, and supporting my communities needs as a front line responder.

This phase of experience strengthened my ability to make decisions under pressure, manage unpredictable scenarios, and maintain a high level of dedicated skill sets. It also reinforced the importance of preparation, training, and continuing education.

Early 2000's

I played the primary role in establishing and managing a volunteer canine search and rescue organization, helping to build it from the ground up into a structured and operationally capable team. This involved developing the organization’s framework, including policies, procedures, and training standards designed to support both individual handlers and coordinated team response.

A significant portion of this work focused on creating and refining training programs that balanced technical requirements with real-world application. This included preparing teams for certification and accreditation processes, while also ensuring they were capable of performing effectively in field operations. Emphasis was placed on consistency, reliability, and maintaining a level of readiness that could be called upon when needed.

This effort required a combination of technical writing, leadership, and hands-on field experience. Standard operating procedures were not only developed on paper, but tested and refined through practical use in training and operational environments. Coordination between leadership, handlers, and support personnel was essential to achieving operational objectives and maintaining a cohesive, effective team.

Through this process, I gained valuable experience in program development, team leadership, and the integration of training with real-world performance and skills that carried forward into later roles and responsibilities.

Mid-2000's

Building on my leadership, I completed structured training in emergency management, incident command systems, and disaster response through nationally recognized programs. These efforts focused on large-scale coordination, logistics, and resource management.

This expanded my perspective from individual responser roles to broader system-level operations, where planning, coordination and management play a critical role in event outcomes.

In addition I participated in overseas contingency support roles, contributing to operations in demanding and rapidly changing military objectives. This experience required adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively within combat environments under pressure.

Late 2000's

Completing advanced training in pre-hospital emergency medical care allowed me to further develop my capabilities in critical care response and advanced patient management. This training built upon my existing foundation and introduced more complex assessment techniques, treatment protocols, and decision-making processes required in high-acuity situations.

During this phase, I focused on refining my ability to quickly evaluate patient conditions, prioritize interventions, and deliver care in unpredictable and often time-sensitive environments. It required a high level of precision, technical knowledge, and the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.

In addition to hands-on skills, this period reinforced the importance of critical thinking, clear communication, and coordinated teamwork when operating in dynamic emergency settings. Each experience contributed to a deeper understanding of patient care, resource management, and the realities of working in high-stakes situations where outcomes are directly influenced by preparation, training, and execution.

Early 2010's

I founded and operated a private canine detection service business. My work involved applying my training methods, managing day to day operations, and delivering services across a variety of environments. It required not only technical skill, but also problem-solving, adaptability, and the ability to operate independently.

This lead me into working in community-based policing style roles involving observation, enforcement, and investigative responsibilities in high-density under served communities. These roles emphasized effective communications, conflict de-escalation and resolution, while maintaining safety within complex social settings.

2013

Continuing to develop my advanced skill set, I remained active within the contract security and investigations fields, focusing on learning through structured training programs, hands-on experience, and ongoing professional development. During this time, I worked to refine my existing capabilities while gaining exposure to a broader range of operational environments and responsibilities.

This period was marked by a continued emphasis on situational awareness, communication, and the ability to adapt to evolving conditions in real-world settings. I also expanded into more specialized areas, building on prior experience while developing a deeper understanding of investigative processes, security operations, and practical problem-solving techniques.

Through consistent training, field experience, and a commitment to continuous improvement, I was able to strengthen both foundational skills and more advanced competencies, creating a well-rounded approach that would support future opportunities and transitions into more complex roles.

Continued Experience and Professional Development for Brad Hazel

2015

A significant opportunity presented itself. I transition into a specialized security and investigations segment, which led to a permanent relocation to Florida and entry into large-scale, high-traffic environments within the theme parks and attractions industry.

This experience provided exposure to complex high profile operations, public relations focused procedures, and the coordination required to support large numbers of guests in dynamic settings. It also offered a deeper understanding of how large organizations manage security, logistics, and infrastructure behind the scenes.

During this time, I further developed my interest in Amateur Radio through participation in an internal organizational radio club. This provided additional insight into advanced communications systems and broader regional infrastructure, reinforcing both technical knowledge and practical application.

A few years later, I transitioned into a completely different role within a similar environment, where a long-standing personal interest in scuba diving developed into professional underwater work. This involved maintaining controlled aquatic habitats, requiring my attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the application of specialized tools and technical skills in unique working conditions.

2019

Just prior to the broader impacts of COVID and its global supply chain disruptions and societal changes, an opportunity arose to establish a long-term residence. This marked a shift toward more permanent, project-focused work and provided the space needed to expand into larger-scale DIY and home improvement efforts.

With this transition, I developed a dedicated workshop space designed for woodworking and other hands-on building projects. This new space allowed for greater flexibility in taking on more complex and long-term DIY & Home Remodeling Projects, while continuing to build my skills across a range of disciplines.

At the same time, I revisited a long-dormant interest in trains and model railroading. With the availability of a  dedicated hobby space, I began exploring layout design, construction, and operations in a more structured and intentional way. This re-engagement combined both technical and creative elements, making it a natural extension of my existing interests.

2022

As our society changes so do our needs. Recognizing threats to my personal privacy, I began actively engaged in developing a strong and focused skill set in physical and digital privacy and security. This lead me to a significant shift in how I manage and uses technology in my everyday life.

This included transitioning from mainstream operating systems to alternative platforms, along with learning new skills and techniques aimed at reducing exposure to data collection and improving my overall digital health.

At the same time, I began building and experimenting with home lab environments and the use of encryption and data storage systems. These efforts were centered around gaining a deeper understanding of how modern technology operates, while implementing practical privacy-focused solutions within the real-world. This period represents my beginning in an ongoing effort to better understand, control, and manage personal data, networks, and information technology in a more independent and intentional way that’s privacy focused by default.

Final Thoughts

I don’t see my background as a straight line from one thing to another, but more as a series of experiences that built on each other over time. The common thread has always been learning through doing, staying adaptable, and continuing to explore new skills and interests as they come.

Today, I may have slowed down but, that same mindset continues to drive me. Whether it’s exploring old electronics, taking on woodworking projects, or building my model railroad layout, the focus remains the same: figure out what I want to accomplish, understand how to get there, apply my knowledge, and continue improving over time. Not everything in my life is perfect, and not everything is final, but that’s part of life’s process.

If you share similar interests in Amateur Radio, DIY & Home Remodeling Projects, and Trains & Model Railroading, we’re more alike than you may think.
